Bleak Market

Meet the pangolins, and quick before they disappear altogether. 

Otherwise known as scaly anteaters, they are ruthlessly hunted for their keratin “armor,” as well as for that which it protects.  Their innards are considered a delicacy, and their scales are prized for an alleged medicinal value.

Pangolins have been called “the most trafficked” animals in the world.  In “one of the biggest busts” that Hong Kong has ever known, the city seized “18,300 pounds of suspected pangolin scales.”  Imagine how many animals would be killed in order to obtain such a heavy load of scales…
