Tomatina: While others go hungry

(USDA Photo)
Although part of the nightshade family, tomatoes are now known to be quite nutritious.  They can, however, be harmful when thrown at people.

That is why the annual Tomatina festival in Bunol, Spain recommends crushing tomatoes before pelting your neighbors with them.  After all, 160 tons of bloody-red missiles could do a lot of damage.

And yet, many consider this glorified food fight to be tons of fun.  This year, as usual, “people cheered and jumped in the party atmosphere…”  And these internet comments were just as juicy:

Sure beats torturing and killing bulls.

In America, we have a similar celebration.  We toss money from the middle class to the poor folks most every day.

Looks like a blast!  Wish wars could be fought with food.

The sad truth is that many wars are being fought with food.  The rich eat well and toss the rest.  The poor are left to lick up the scraps.

Such is the seedy side of it all.
