Primordial Chunk

Spoonful of Silica   (Photo by Achim Hering)
A significant chunk of extraterrestrial history was recently found within the Sahara Desert.

The content of this meteor fragment leads scientists to estimate that it originated about 4.6 billion years ago.  Named Eng Chech 002 (EC 002 for short), it seems to have broken off from a crusty planet in the making.

Rich in silica, EC 002 stands out from the usual iron-rich meteorites.  Researchers are theorizing that silica was likely a commonplace component of our solar system's earliest protoplanets.
