(Leonardo's Presumed 'Selfie') |
There’s an old New York
City joke that goes something like
this: A young boy asked a Manhattan
gentleman how to get to Carnegie
Hall. The gentleman answered, “Practice, my
son, practice!”
That’s the usual way
for performers to be
featured at Carnegie Hall. But what if there’s another way? What if there’s a genius within us all, just
waiting to emerge?
Strangely enough, there very
well might be. There have been numerous cases of “ordinary” people who suddenly
displayed great talent in art,
music or mathematics. These cases are grouped
within the general category of “savant
syndrome.”
Savants exhibit sudden,
extraordinary skills. These abilities can
emerge in early childhood, or as the result of a
precipitating event (stroke or injury). They can even appear at any stage of
life, with no apparent explanation or preparation.
Any one of us could therefore be
lounging on the couch when the urge to
create a masterpiece strikes. This urge could be coupled with whatever talent it takes
to see things through. You or I have then won an
artistic lottery, without even a ticket to show
for it. Genius can be that mysterious and that
miraculous. Who our next Leonardo might
be is anyone’s guess...
