Life as we don't know it

Purified Silicon   (Photo by Enricoros)
Sometimes the life that you’re seeking is in your own backyard.  Literally as well as figuratively.

We’re not talking buried treasure here.  We’re talking something far more exotic: alien life forms.

Although we’ve come to associate the word “alien” with little green beings from outer space, the term simply refers to that which is different from the norm.  And our norm for life is that it’s based upon carbon. But what if there are other biochemical
configurations?

What if there is a “shadow biosphere” that we’re completely unaware of?  What if exists on our own blue dot?  And what if we’ve been sharing real estate with it right along?

Scientists have theorized that an “alternative biochemistry” might exist here on Earth that is silicon-based.  Caltech researchers have already bred “a bacterial protein that created bonds with silicon.”  And there’s plenty of silicon to go around.

Such aliens could be microscopic, but who’s to say that they’re not also intelligent?  Microbes have already manipulated our bodies, so why not our planet too?
