Scientists have been noticing that the songs of white-throated sparrows are quickly changing.
Whereas their chirp-a-longs used to go with triplets and out, they now end in doublets.
This new rendition has been spreading like wildfire across Canada.
Sparrows have been learning it from one another
“at an unprecedented rate.” Normally, it takes decades for like-throated birds to change their tune.
Why this doublet
has caught on so fast remains one of life’s many mysteries.
