New York State of Diversity

(Fair Use)
In March 1976, The New Yorker ran a cover illustration by Saul Steinberg called “View of the World from Ninth Avenue.”    It portrayed a perspective that many still cling to: that there’s New York City, and then there’s the rest of the world…

New York State is often viewed as an extension of New York City.  But much of the state is far from synonymous with its largest metropolis.  Nevertheless, the two are often perceived of as one.

Case in point: Cars with New York license plates are now being stopped at Rhode Island check points because New York City and its surrounding areas are coronavirus hotspots.  Is anyone asking whether such travelers hail from Brooklyn or from Croghan (look it up)?  Or is the entire state being flagged as one big menace?
