One Lone Vote

Cynics say that you’re only as good as your latest mistake.  But sometimes it seems even worse than that.

The Rev. David Boase, a long-term and legal permanent resident of the United States, made one mistake years ago.  He voted in a local election which happened to include “a single federal Democratic candidate” on the ballot.

Boase had been given a voter’s registration at the Illinois DMV, despite his “two forms of British identification.” This led him to believe that voting “to boost fire-protection resources for the local fire department” would be okay.

Eleven years later, Boase honestly disclosed this one vote when questioned by authorities from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).  Although he has otherwise been a sterling community member, Boase will soon be deported back to his native England. There were no other “aggravating factors,” just that one “lone vote.”
