When things
looked particularly desperate,
Aldi would engage in Bible
reading and prayer. This sustained
him, even when 10 ships passed
by without noticing his plight.
Finally, a
bulk freighter picked up Aldi’s radio
signal. It took several attempts for
the captain to steer close enough for a
rescue.
Aldi was
then provided with “food, clothes, and
a haircut.” He was taken to the
Japanese consulate, which arranged for his
flight back home to Indonesia.
