Sports mascots: Breaking stereotypes

Sports teams might wish to practice good sportsmanship by eliminating stereotypical mascots.

Just recently, Barack Obama spoke out against mascots that promote disrespect for Native American heritage.  The President is all for breaking such stereotypes, and specifically stated, “I believe that includes our sports teams.”

Making reference to "a certain NFL team in Washington,” Obama suggested that it follow the lead of Adidas.  Adidas, a well-known “sporting apparel giant,” has offered to design new logos and even pay “for part of the cost of new uniforms.”

If derogatory stereotypes of this ilk were no longer popularized, Native Americans might feel “supported and respected” rather than devalued by mainstream America.
