What Lurks Below

As the permafrost thaws, who knows what sleeping giants might awaken.  What’s tiny in size could have huge implications for human health.

Scientists suspect that there are “Methuselah microbes” lurking beneath the frozen Arctic ground. These millennia-old germs could reinvigorate themselves at our expense.  Some may never have encountered humans before; we therefore don’t know what their effects might be.

If that weren’t enough, Cold War leftovers are also in the mix.  These include “hazardous chemicals and radioactive material.”
