Do you shop Rite
Aid? If so, you might have gotten more
than you bargained for. And so might have they.
Reuters
recently unveiled that Rite Aid has been secretly deploying “facial recognition
software… in hundreds of locations in
the US.” Worse yet, its
drugstores within
neighborhoods of color “were more than three times as
likely”
to use this technology.
Still worse is that Rite
Aid’s technology vendor,
DeepCam, has been linked to China. And before 2017, the chain
utilized
“blurry photos” from a
company named FaceFirst. Black individuals, in particular, were
often misidentified by such tactics.
