Morse Code SOS (Public Domain) |
In this age of complex technology, sometimes simplicity works best.
SOS has long been an internationally recognized distress signal. It has been transmitted by Morse code, audio tones and automatic alarms. In the absence of these, it has been flashed by mirrors and carved into snowbanks.
Recently, three stranded sailors were rescued from a lonely Pacific island. Their sand-written SOS had been spotted by a U.S. Air Force search pilot. Because SOS reads the same forwards and backwards, it is that much easier to detect.
Sometimes it’s those tried-and-true methods that get the job done.
