Mob Mentality II

Blind Men and Elephant    (Public Domain)
Many a conflicting report has been featured in the media ever since the recent Indigenous Peoples March made lurid headlines.

Some say that a student was deliberately harassing a Native American elder.  Some say that this student was instead trying to defuse a volatile situation.

Some are blaming the elder.  Some are blaming the student.  Some are blaming other groups within the heated crowd.

One thing they all have in common: a tendency to see the world through ego-colored glasses.  In other words, we all (protagonists, antagonists and reporters alike) are hardwired to defend ourselves
and to blame others.

None of us have the whole picture, but all of us react as though we do.  Whether a blogger, a radio personality, a student, an activist, a president, a principal, a parent or a Tweeter, we all grab the elephant’s knee and think we’ve got ourselves a tree.
