British archaeologists uncover 'Great-grandfather Flinders'

Captain Flinders  (State Library of New South Wales)
On a site designated to provide high-speed rail service between London and Birmingham, a team of archaeologists discovered the remains of their proverbial great-grandfather.

What once served as burial grounds for over 40,000 people was later “absorbed by the Euston train station in the 1840s.” It had long been suspected that Captain Matthew Flinders rested within one of those many graves.

Captain Flinders was a famed “navigator, hydrographer and scientist” who basically “put Australia on the map.”  His grandson, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie, has been dubbed the “Father of Archaeology.”  How fitting it is that these current archaeologists therefore uncovered their own great-grandfather!
