Making a Racket for Equity

Whereas basketball is known as an inner-city sport, tennis has somewhat of an elite reputation.

This is partly because tennis rackets cost more than basketballs.  Jordan Pickett, a 17-year-old student, has found a way to pare down this cost differential.  She is rehabbing used rackets, then giving them away.

It takes up to an hour to restring a racket, and Picket has thus far done 16 of them.  Many are being donated to youth groups within the Fresno, California area.

Used rackets are collected from regional country clubs.  Pickett’s college advisor, Laura Mahoney, applauds these efforts.  She stated that Jordan has “a great heart” plus “internal drive and motivation.”
