Context Counts

Take pretty much anything out of context, and it can sound twisted.

The Declaration of Independence, when read in its entirety, is an ethical-sounding document.
However, one of its passages does resemble hate speech by today’s standards.

As part of a diatribe against King George III, this passage states:  He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes, and conditions.

Facebook, in its infinite wisdom, initially blocked a 12-part posting of this famous Declaration, explaining that one section “goes against our standards on hate speech.”

The year before, some Twitter readers were “outraged” upon reading NPR-posted excerpts from the Declaration.  They assumed that these isolated quotes contained current terrorist propaganda.
