Back in the day, humans allegedly
had many interactions with the sun god Apollo.
Those whom
Apollo favored led long healthy
lives. Those whom Apollo shunned experienced deadly plagues. Even maximum sunscreen couldn't stop his Olympian flare-ups.
So it's taken millennia before people have dared to come close again. This time around, they’re opting
for vicarious thrills. Rather than risking face-to-face
encounters with Mr. Hottie, NASA is
relying solely upon technological communications.
Eartly next month,
the space agency will be launching its Parker
Solar Probe, designed “to fly seven times closer to
the sun than any other spacecraft has before.” Parker will be exploring such curiosities as coronal plasma (“electrified
gas that shoots from the sun’s surface”), the
solar corona (the “sun’s atmosphere”), and solar
wind (“the charged gas… that bombards Earth”).
