Homeless in Paris (Photo by Eric Pouhier) |
There’s a movement afoot to clothe the
homeless. In Cergy, a suburb of Paris, an
organization named Force CommUNE has
set an example. It urges
residents to hang spare clothing outdoors for
the taking. The clothing can be
placed in plastic bags with notes that
read: I’m not lost, I’m for you if you’re cold.
The movement
has caught on in other Parisian
suburbs, as well as in cities around the
globe. In Greensboro, North
Carolina, Project Warmth engages in
similar distributions. In Halifax,
Canada, mother Tara Smith-Atkins
is teaching her daughter’s circle
of friends to do the
same.
Smith-Atkins
reports that these youngsters
are learning empathy through such
efforts. After hanging out clothing
for an hour or so in the bitter cold,
they couldn’t wait to get back to
their nice warm lives.
What went with
them was a greater empathy for those
still out on the streets. Not to
mention a greater appreciation for the heated car
that they jumped back into.
