Romero circa 1979 (Public Domain) |
This defied
decades of resistance from church
conservatives who “opposed [Romero’s]
association with liberation theology.” During the 1960s and 70s, Latin
American liberation theologians were pushing
for “political and structural changes to
eradicate poverty,” sometimes even “supporting
armed struggle against oppressors.”
Romero did
not hesitate to speak his mind. His
social-justice sermons were broadcast to “hundreds
of thousands of people.” After receiving
numerous death threats, Romero was “shot
through the heart by a sniper while celebrating
mass.” At his funeral, many a mourner
was also shot to death.
