South Korea’s work week was
practically the longest within all developed countries. Second only to Mexico’s,
it routinely consisted of 68 hours (not including
overtime). Compared with France’s standard 40, this seemed quite inhumane.
Keeping a
campaign promise, President Moon Jae-in not only “cut
the maximum weekly work hours to 52,” but also increased
the minimum wage by 16%. Although this is a
mighty leap forward, South Koreans still labor about 10 “standard work weeks” more per year than “workers
in the UK and Australia.”
