How the Mighty have Fallen

Washington's Tomb  (Photo by Tim Evanson)
Trees might not have done it all, but they’ve certainly seen it all while standing patiently by.

A 227-year-old hemlock on George Washington’s beloved Mount Vernon estate recently went down during a Nor’easter.  Along with it fell a cedar that had stood guard over Washington’s tomb for centuries.

Having been an ardent landscaper, Washington likely loved these trees.  And who knows?  They may have loved him back.

Such love hopefully lives way beyond earthly incarnations.  Although Heaven isn’t fortified with wood, it is fortified with the kind of mutual aid that trees and people share.
