The Greatest Mistake

Oneida Community  (from a 1907 postcard)
According to leadership coach Marcel Schwantes, life’s greatest mistake is fearing to make one.

Perfectionists tend to give up on challenges because they are afraid of failure.  They often “stick with safer tasks” that are already mastered.  This can greatly inhibit “innovation and creativity.”

Convinced that no one else can handle the job adequately, perfectionists find it hard to delegate.  Nevertheless, “analysis paralysis” causes them to habitually procrastinate.

Seeing life as an “all or nothing game,” they often indulge in “black-and-white” thinking.  Fearing “criticism, blame and ridicule,” perfectionists shun feedback that could be helpful.

Although this profile seems dim, it can be lightened.  Self-awareness is key.  Frequently ask, “Did I set the bar too high?”  Break large goals into smaller ones: “weekly, daily or even hourly goals.”  Remind yourself that failure is an essential part of the human learning curve.  Perfection is God's realm, all the rest are works in progress.
