Mardi Gras: Fatter than Monday

Contrary to popular opinion, the term Mardi Gras is not synonymous with “Party Hearty.”  It literally means “Fat Tuesday.”

Why is this Tuesday different from any other weekday?  This Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, i.e., the last day before stuffing one’s face and prancing half-naked in the street becomes frowned upon.

So eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we do a 180.  Another name for Mardi Gras is Shrove Tuesday.  “Shrove” is kind of the opposite of Gras.  It derives from the Pre-Lenten season of Shrovetide, a time for self-examination and vows of repentance.

Shrovetide traditionally lasted from the ninth Sunday before Easter (Septuagesima Sunday) through the day before Ash Wednesday.  In other words, Shrovetide is a preparation for Lent, which in turn is a preparation for Easter.  Those who prefer frenzy have morphed these sacred times into one long carnival season.
