As the Wheel Turns

Heimlich Maneuver  (by Evolution and evolvability)
Sometimes it takes decades for gratitude to surface.  Fortunately, “deep-breath moments” are their own reward.

Rick Freund knows of such moments firsthand.  He not only administered CPR to a heart-attack victim, but also “performed the Heimlich maneuver on a stranger choking on food.”

His most daring rescue occurred when a baby was trapped in a burning building.   Freund was only 24 at the time, but already had the makings of a hero.  After being hoisted through the baby’s small window, he entered a room filled with smoke.  Freund managed to save the infant before exiting himself.

This unsung hero then “walked away without even knowing if the baby he saved was a girl or a boy.”  Forty-six years passed before the “baby’s” family contacted him directly.

But gratitude had been growing right along.  The baby, now 47-year-old Robert Magee, grew up to be quite the hero himself.  By co-organizing “a large blood drive for the past 18 years,” Magee has “helped save hundreds of other lives” in the tradition of his own rescue.
What comes around, goes around.  When the karmic wheel turns slowly, there is all the more opportunity for good things to evolve.
