Doris Day: Alleviating pet peeves

Doris Day long ago exchanged Hollywood glamour for one of her favorite causes: alleviating animal suffering.

The Doris Day Animal Foundation began in 1978 and is still going strong.  It supports “projects that rescue, care for and protect animals.”  These projects include one that helps seniors with pet care needs, and another that “provides trained service dogs for veterans.”

Day herself, who turns 95 today, is also going strong. Perhaps it's her “never say never” attitude.  She has met with much success, including an Academy Award nomination for “Pillow Talk” and “critical acclaim" for other film roles.

As for her "goody two shoes" image?  That might be more Hollywood than real.  After all, who wants to live for almost a century without cutting up once in a while?
