Dreaming of beaming: Teleportation possible

One day, Scotty may not be the only one beaming folks up.  University of Jena researcher Alexander Szameit has now “successfully teleported the properties of solid particles.”

Although this is not the same as teleporting the particles themselves, it is a mighty leap forward. Given the proliferation of quantum teleportation (“the teleportation of data in the form of electrons and light particles”), it might just be a matter of time before the classical Star Trek type follows suit.

In order to achieve the teleportation of physical properties, Szameit’s team linked them to properties of laser beams.  So far, this method has only worked within limited distances.  It nevertheless, “allows for the instantaneous transmission of information without any loss of time, possessing plenty of potential for use in telecommunications technology.”
