It turns out
that some “star reporters” have been padding
their facts with fiction. Claas Relotius, a well-known journalist
for “a top European news magazine,”
has peppered his articles with “composite
characters” that spout invented
quotations.
Relotius is
not alone in the fake news
genre. Back in 2003, Jayson Blair of The New York Times dolled up his own
articles, while also grabbing “material
from other news outlets.” In 1998,
Stephen Glass of The New Republic was dubbed “a
serial fabricator,” then fired.
