In his
farewell address to the troops, Secretary of
Defense Jim Mattis urged them to “keep
the faith in our country,” despite its
current volatility.
As Mattis
sees it, such faith involves upholding “the
Constitution while protecting
our way of life.” He also reminded
troops that difficult times can bring
out the best in humanity.
Being an
avid student of history, Mattis quoted
Lincoln’s “one-line telegram” to
then-General Ulysses S. Grant. It stated:
Let nothing which is transpiring change, hinder, or delay your military movements, or plans.
During the
new year, when promises abound,
civilians can also learn a thing or two from such
steadfast resolve.
