43 Lonely Years

Social Animals   (Photo by jinterwas)
After what might be compared to 43 years of solitary confinement, Flavia finally succumbed to it all.

A female Asian elephant, Flavia was “living alone in a zoo” for all that time.  Whereas elephants can live to be 70 in their natural environment, she only made it to age 47.

PACMA, an “animal rights group,” had been lobbying for Flavia to be transferred to a sanctuary.  She had been showing signs of depression and deterioration for months before her death.

PACMA’s president, Silvia Barquero, stated: We hope that no animal will go through this again.
