Jelly Rolls Flexibly

(Fair Use)
When it comes to political staunchness, Jason DeFord has rolled with the punches.

Although many of his fans have bled Red, true Blue folks are also in his camp.  Jelly Roll panders to neither side, but offers the wise alternative of realizing that politics, like life itself, is often a mixed bag.

After his recent hosting of the Jimmy Kimmel show, during which he joked about the president’s weight, DeFord was told by some that his career was now over.  Rather than recanting with some fake apology, he instead announced that a U.S. president should be able to take such jokes in stride.

Humor can sometimes sting, but it can also refreshingly heal.  It’s yet another mixed bag, one that holds blessings from numerous perspectives.

Eating Her Own

15th-Century Venus
(Public Domain)
Although the second planet in our solar system is romantically called Venus, its history might not be quite so loving.

Just as the goddess herself was not all that disciplined, this hellish world also has some intense appetites.  Scientists are now thinking that the reason Venus currently has no moon is because she gobbled hers up long ago.

It may have looked too much like a giant pie in the sky, and Venus needed something yummy to go with all that wine.  Roses may be pretty to look at, but they just won’t satisfy a burning hunger.

Venus’ orbital patterns may have greatly enabled such a passionate undertaking.  Scientists believe that they slowly drew the erstwhile moon closer and closer until a crash was inevitable.  The two became one as Venus drew the lunar rubble toward her own ample breast.

If not now, when?

Ukrainian Wedding
(Leopold Geisbe, 1867)

Office workers getting close to retirement age often ask themselves, “If not now, when?”  If not lounging now, when?  If not traveling now, when?  If not adventuring now, when?

This question seems valid within that situation, but is actually quite valid within any situation.  We never really know when life will retire us, perhaps temporarily, perhaps for good.

This is especially apparent during wartime.  If you were a Ukrainian soldier and/or medic during the current siege, would you hasten to marry the love of your life? Would knowing that death could come before the ceremony is even complete deter you or inspire you?

It seemed to inspire those who participated in a recent Ukrainian wedding.  As Russian drones flew overhead, the medic bride and soldier groom were surrounded by fellow freedom fighters, all of whom echoed their Spirit of, “If not now, when?”
