Best Man at what?

Who's on first?  (photo by jimmyweee)
If three’s a crowd, then why does a groom need a best man?

Weddings of old sometimes turned into jousting matches. When bridal abductions went awry, kith and kin would come out swinging.  At one another.  With swords and lances.  An armed best man came in mighty handy.

Since most grooms are right-handed, it was important to keep that side free for defensive action.  Brides were therefore shunted to the left.

In today’s traditional weddings, brides remain left of the altar.  Some are even left at the altar.
