Europa (NASA/JPL/DLR photo) |
NASA’s Europa Clipper is set to launch in 2022, and should reach its icy destination by 2030. Where there’s ice, there’s water - and where there’s water, there’s often life.
What’s even more promising are Europa’s “double ridges,” which offer hope that their ice is penetrable with Earth-developed tools. Such ridges could indicate “shallow water pockets” within the ice shell. At the very least, this ice might be somewhat porous. At the very most, life might exist within these pools.
