First they saw it, then they didn't

Mount Asama   (Photo by Ski Mania)
One of history’s great mysteries occurred during May 1100: the month the moon disappeared from sight.

For centuries, people have debated the cause of this strange phenomenon.  Some said it was an eclipse, others chalked it up to an eruption from Iceland’s “Gateway to Hell” (aka “Mount Hekla”).  Neither theory particularly rang true.

Yet those who blamed volcanic eruptions were on the right track.  Right track, wrong volcano!  A series of eruptions from Japan’s Mount Asama lined up well with the moon’s so-called disappearance.  Mystery solved.
