Wheel of Misfortune

Swiss Alps   (Photo by Earth explorer)
Most people aren’t keen on pondering the details of their own funeral.

It may seem cheesy to contemplate gourmet dining as a key feature.  Yet a finely-aged wheel of cheese is a traditional accompaniment at certain Swiss burials.  Such haute cuisine had been carefully prepared by the deceased during a lifetime of (not necessarily eager) anticipation.

This “cheese of the dead” is eaten with bread and washed down with wine.  A “picnic” version is placed in the casket, along with a pair of sturdy boots.  The latter is for ghosts that are “rumored to wander the  glaciers after dark.”
