Mending the Walls

Robert Frost Farm in Derry, New Hampshire   (Photo by Craig Michaud)
It was poet laureate Robert Frost who famously wrote, “Good fences make good neighbors.”  He put these words of intergenerational wisdom into the mouth of an old-time New England farmer.

Somehow we’ve lost track of their importance.  We’ve been favoring architectural open concepts in which the lines of privacy are greatly blurred.  Kitchens merge into dining areas, which in turn merge into living rooms.  Old walls are knocked down in favor of new notions.

Perhaps mending such walls would create peaceful sanctuaries in which individuals could dream big dreams.  Perhaps there is too much emphasis upon socializing, socializing, socializing.  Perhaps big-screen gatherings around heavily-laden tables aren’t bastions of enlightenment.

Perhaps good fences really do make good neighbors.
