Death of Caesar (Painting by Vincent Camuccini) |
People are dying to hear wisdom from the dying. But historical accounts of deathbed scenes are often condensed and edited.
You
don’t get to hear all the oohs and aahs between stilted utterances.
During the time leading up to death, communication seems metaphorical. Travel-related language is common, and often evolves in a “piecemeal” manner.
Further research regarding the actual words of dying people is sorely needed. These studies need to persist over time, so that seemingly random statements might be better understood within an overall context.
