This recently occurred when actress Lupita Nyong’o viewed the cover page of Grazia UK, only
to find her ponytail gone and her hair slicked back. She attributes this to commonplace prejudice against people with “dark skin and kinky, coily hair.”
Nyong'o now embraces her “natural heritage,” despite social conditioning toward “light skin and straight silky
hair.” She's glad to
be a role model so that children of color can realize how naturally beautiful they are.
