Uluru not Disneyworld

Uluru Warning  (Photo by Lee M)
Imagine the face of your favorite church, mosque or synagogue being pockmarked with climbers.  Now imagine them snickering, snacking and treating your sacred site as though it were a playground.

The equivalent of this has been occurring on and around Uluru for years.  Uluru (or as tourists have called it, Ayers Rock) has long been hallowed ground for the Anangu natives of “Australia’s red center.”

This sandstone monolith “juts up 1,142 feet from the surrounding plains.”  Although the Anangu have long implored visitors to refrain from climbing, these pleas have often been ignored.  “Since the 1950s," more than 30 Uluru climbers have died while treading upon its holy slopes.
