Barbie's Hijab

Ibtihaj Muhammad   (Public Domain)
Barbie has shown up with countless fashion statements, but this time around she is also making a religious statement.

As part of its Barbie Shero program, which honors “female pioneers and innovators,” Mattel will soon be debuting a Barbie likeness of Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad.  Muhammad is “the first Muslim-American athlete to compete in a hijab.” The hijab is a traditional Muslim symbol of modesty and privacy.

Muhammad announced that this is “a childhood dream come true.”  Mattel spokesperson Sejal Shah Miller added that this doll will remind a multitude of unrepresented young girls “that they can be and do anything.”
