One Last Milkshake

Young Love   (Photo by Kevin Simpson)
The human body is a bittersweet gift.  On the one hand (sometimes quite literally), there are all sorts of aches and pains.  But on (and in) the other, there can be such treats as Tommy’s mocha milkshake.

Tommy's is a well-known restaurant on Cleveland’s east side.  It is particularly famous for its milkshakes, which are not easily forgotten.  Even when Ohio natives move miles away, they still long for this taste of home.

Such was the case with a young lady named Emily Pomeranz, who was dying of pancreatic cancer.  After being moved to a Washington, D.C. hospice, Pomeranz was asked about final wishes.  Emily then “smiled and told [dear friend] Klein that she wished she could have just one more Tommy’s mocha milkshake.”

Considering that Emily was 375 miles away from Tommy’s at the time, this was a challenge.  Nevertheless, owner Tommy Fello found a way for the milkshake to remain frozen during an overnight delivery.

Emily was thrilled.  Four days later, she died.  Life itself is a bittersweet gift.
