Nemeses of Narcissists

Narcissus Times Two    (Painting by Caravaggio)
When Narcissus first saw his own reflection in a pool of water, he thought he had finally met his match.  Little did he know how true that was.

Thinking he had finally seen someone beautiful enough to love, Narcissus fell head over heels for this “selfie.”  Forgetting to eat or drink, he finally succumbed to starvation.

Although mythological story lines might seem a bit extreme, they harbor some enduring truths.  Narcissus may be gone, but his psychological descendants are alive and all-too-well.

Shana Lebowitz of Business Insider lists many signs of contemporary narcissism.  These include the following:  gloating while winning, abusing when losing, feeling underappreciated, grandiosity, perfectionism, exhibiting a “my way or the highway” approach, self righteousness, contentiousness, stylishness, vindictiveness, excelling at leadership and entertainment, physical attractiveness and perfectionism.

Modern narcissists don't always ignore food and drink.  In fact, they’re the life of many an A-list banquet.  Starving for true affection, they tend to climb social ladders faster than you can say “Donald Trump.”
