Homeless to heroic: A karmic circle

We’ve often been told, “What comes around, goes around.”  Sometimes, however, it takes a real-life incident to drive this point home.

Such an event recently occurred in Houston, Texas.  A formerly-homeless man, who had been given shelter by a longtime friend, awoke one night from “a big old boom.” Turned out the house was on fire, and everyone else was still asleep.

The man, Thomas Smith, quickly awakened his friend and her two grandchildren.  As the house filled with smoke, Smith led them all to safety.

Although Houstonians are now calling Smith a hero, he brushes aside the term.  He told the local media, “I wouldn’t say I’m a hero.  I just thank God for helping us all.”

Smith might have added, “…and for helping us all to help one another.”  For it is rightly said, “What comes around, goes around.”
