If you’re wondering how to respond to the word “sut,” then you’re probably human. A well-trained dog, upon hearing that word, would simply sit.
Scientists are discovering that dogs can’t differentiate between words that are only one sound apart. To a dog, “sit,” “sat” and “sut” are one and the same. Infant humans cannot make such a distinction either. That skill kicks in at about 14 to 20 months of babyhood.
If you're wondering whether dogs even hear such subtle shades of sound, they do. Yet to them, these are just different versions of the same old command.
