Although wife Hannah is admittedly the apple of Archie Thomas’ eye, he has lately discovered another close contender.
Their marriage remains solid because this contender can yield sweetness for both. It's an apple, a golden-speckled “windfall fruit” that had toppled from a century-old tree within an ancient Wiltshire orchard. Thomas, who makes a habit of noticing such things, had never seen one like it. He therefore brought it to the Royal Horticultural Society for analysis.
Turns out that it is unique, most likely “a cross between a cultivated apple… and a wild European crab apple.” Best of all, Thomas is thinking of naming it “Hannah,” thus honoring the love of his life.
