McCain in 2017 (C-Span) |
According to
biographer Stephen Mansfield, “Prayer was
the most important thing for him when he was
a POW.” McCain continued to advocate
prayer during times of “national crisis,” but
was otherwise cautious about public
displays of faith. He did not want sacred matters
to become political ploys.
McCain's
religious roots went way back. His “great-grandfather
was an Episcopal minister,” and McCain
himself “attended Episcopal day and boarding
schools. All this served him well at “Hanoi
Hilton,” where McCain was allowed to preach during
inmate-held services. His cellmate later reported
that McCain recalled the Episcopal liturgy “word
for word.”
While in
captivity, McCain prayed more fervently than he ever
had as a free man. At a POW Christmas hymn
sing, he recited biblical accounts of Jesus’ birth. Years afterward, McCain stated that this
service was “more
sacred” to him than any other, before or since.
