Emus on the Run

Coolamon Region   (Photo by CSIRO)
The drought in Australia is not only affecting farmers.  Emus are on the run, desperately seeking food and water.

These large flightless birds have been mobbing the streets of Broken Hill, “an outback mining town in New South Wales.”   They’ve been raiding gardens and invading football fields.  Residents have been assisting them the best they can, as they themselves struggle with feeding livestock.

Rainfall has been at record lows within regions of New South Wales.  This can become a dire situation, as this “populous state” normally “produces about a quarter of the country’s agricultural output.”
