Beware the Hippo

Although it is wonderful to love all of God’s creatures, it is also wise to respect their capabilities.

The name “hippopotamus” literally means “river horse.”  This placid-looking animal can actually be quite dangerous to humans, especially when defending turf and family.  Despite
their stocky build, hippos can cover short distances at almost 20 miles per hour.

Two Chinese tourists recently stood on the shores of a Kenyan lake while one took pictures of a nearby hippo.  The hippo felt threatened and attacked, killing the
photographer and injuring his colleague.  Although tragic, this is not all that unusual.  “Hippos kill about 500 people in Africa each year.”
