Heather
Hopkins, a special-needs teacher, began a Cool
Beans Cafe at the Poquoson Middle
School. Five of her students run the shop, each
having their own specific tasks. They thereby
gain “experience with job skills and social
interactions outside a typical
classroom environment.”
Teachers, in
turn, get freshly-made tea, cocoa or
coffee delivered right to their door for a dollar a cup. Satisfied customers include
other staff, too. A $1600 grant from
the Virginia Department of Education
provided seed money for this win-win program.
