Cheering Them On

1948 Cheerleaders  (uwdigitalcollections)
Three cheers for justice!  Why should NFL cheerleaders be treated like second-class citizens?

Although often considered to be members of the dance profession, cheerleaders are often viewed unprofessionally.  They are subject to sexual harassment on an ongoing basis, as well as to “extremely low pay and long hours, and strict rules covering everything from weight and appearance to social-media use.”  These restrictive rules do not extend “to players
or other team representatives.”

In response to some "discrimination claims against the league,” the NFL issued a “soothing” statement which lacked concrete solutions.  Former NFL cheerleaders therefore intend to pursue justice further, in the hopes that substantial change will occur.

Mapping the Milky Way

Map of Earth, 1689 CE   (Public Domain)
Many of us know that Milky Way candy contains chocolate and sugar.  None of us really know what fully comprises its namesake.

Nevertheless, there’s an effort underway to map out our galaxy.  The European Space Agency (ESA) recently “released the most accurate census yet of stars” to be found there.

In doing so, scientists “gained new insights into the life cycle of stars and how the Milky Way was formed.”  Astronauts may one day utilize such data in their journeys through time and space.   It’s a bit more complicated than Mapquest, but functional nevertheless.

Hot Utah Jazz, Cold Thunder Blues

(2015 photo by Keith Allison)
No one can say that Russell Westbrook didn’t give it his all during this year’s NBA playoffs.  No one, that is, except some rabid Jazz fans.

Minutes after Oklahoma City suffered a crushing defeat by Utah, these fans seized the opportunity to heckle Westbrook.  Rather than graciously acknowledging the reigning MVP’s amazing stats, they tried to tear him (and perhaps his family) down.

Hit a man when he’s down, and anything can happen.  Westbrook simply had had enough, and afterwards “sang” these blues:  Here in Utah there are a lot of disrespectful vulgar things are said to the players here with these fans truly disrespectful. Talk about your
families, your kids, it's disrespect to the game and I think it's something that needs to be brought up.

Utah’s star rookie, Donovan Mitchell, attempted this defense:  It happens everywhere, not just in Utah.  Worse yet.  Seems like this just bolsters Westbrook’s stance all the more.
